It’s Never Too Late to Surf
Not everyone is lucky enough to grow up by the ocean. For most of us, surfing only becomes possible later in life: in our 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, or even beyond. Work, responsibilities, and simply where we were born often kept us away from it.
But this should not stop you. In fact, learning to surf as an adult can be even more meaningful. You choose it for yourself. You arrive with patience, humility, and a real desire to learn. Yes, it can feel challenging at first, but it is also deeply rewarding.
Even Noemi and I only started later in life, but as you can tell, this did not stop us from turning surfing into our life. Standing on a wave for the first time does not care about your age. It only asks that you show up.

Surf Destinations in Europe for Adult Surfers: Peniche vs Ericeira vs Sagres
When it comes to learning or improving your surf as an adult, not all European surf destinations are created equal. Each has its vibe, its perks, and its drawbacks. Here is our honest take:
Peniche
- Pros: Amazing surf spots, wild and untouched nature, plenty of variety for different levels
- Cons: The best waves are extremely crowded, infrastructure is limited, and there is little social life. Not many nice cafés or bars to relax after surfing. Winter can be cold, and the overall vibe is more rugged than relaxing
Ericeira
- Pros: Super easy to reach, plenty of social life, parties, bars, and cafés. World-famous surf spots with consistent waves
- Cons: Many spots are on rocks, which makes them challenging and often unfriendly for beginners. The best breaks are crowded. The “too cool for school” surf scene can create social pressure, and it is definitely a hotspot for trendy younger surfers, which is not always ideal when you want a relaxed, adult-focused learning environment
Sagres
- Pros: Quiet, relaxed, and perfect for adults. Consistent beginner-friendly waves with safe beach breaks. Small-town feel, raw natural beauty, and a peaceful rhythm that allows you to learn at your own pace. Excellent balance of surf, social life, and relaxation. Most visitors are adults between 20 and 50, creating a mature and welcoming atmosphere
- Cons: Smaller town, so nightlife is limited if you are looking for big parties. But most adult surfers we meet would not trade that calm for crowded bars
Why Sagres Is the Best Place in Europe to Learn Surfing as an Adult
As you know, learning to surf as an adult is different. You are more aware of your fears, more intentional with your time, and more selective about the places you choose.
You are not just looking for waves. You are looking for the right environment, one that makes you feel safe, gives you the right motivations and challenges, and at the same time allows you to fully relax and forget about the busy working life.
For us, that place is Sagres.
Sagres offers something that has become rare in the modern surf industry:
- You do not need to be one of the “cool kids” to belong
- No social pressure, no performance, no judgment from better surfers
- One of the most consistent surf regions in Europe, with waves every day of the year
- Safe, sandy beach breaks ideal for learning and building confidence
- Crazy variety of surf spots for every level
- Uncrowded beaches with space to learn without stress
- Calm and relaxed environment, far from mass tourism
- Plenty of alternatives to surfing such as yoga, hiking, skating, cycling, and nature
- A like-minded crowd; most visitors are between 20 and 50, creating a mature, easygoing atmosphere
- Raw, untouched natural beauty all around you
- A peaceful rhythm that allows you to learn at your own pace
In our opinion, in Sagres, surfing feels accessible again, simple, human, and possible for anyone willing to give it a go.

What You Need When You’re Surfing Past Your 30s
At Lemontree, we know what we are talking about, because we are exactly in the same situation. Around 90% of our guests are between 25 and 55 years old, and both Noemi and I only started surfing as adults. We know the excitement, but also the fatigue, the small frustrations, and especially the importance of having the right environment around you.
Over the years, we understood that an adult surf trip is not only about waves. It is about everything else that makes those waves enjoyable.
1. A peaceful place to stay, no crowds, no messy dorms, no teenager party chaos
Sleep becomes important. Recovery becomes important. And honestly, no one wants to share a messy dorm room with strangers anymore. This is exactly why at Lemontree we only have private rooms. No bunk beds, no noise at night, no party pressure. The house is small on purpose. It allows you to meet people naturally, have a chat at breakfast or after surf, but still guarantees a calm, respectful environment

2. A location that makes surfing easy, not complicated
When you are younger, you do not care about logistics. When you are older, you do. Being close to the surf makes a huge difference. Lemontree is located just 200 meters from Mareta Beach and Tonel Beach here in Sagres. You can walk to the surf in a few minutes. No cars, no planning, no stress. If you do have a car, there is parking right in front of the house. Even the bus stop is only 100 meters away
We feel so extremely lucky to have such a lovely location, here you’ll be able to see exactly where we are
3. Good cafés, restaurants, and social life, because surf trips are also about enjoying life
One of the best parts of a surf trip, as an adult, is everything around surfing. A good coffee after the session. A nice dinner. A glass of wine. Maybe a concert or a DJ set. Lemontree is right in the center of Sagres, and everything is walking distance. No need to organise anything. You just step outside and enjoy

4. Alternatives to surfing, because your body needs balance
When you are learning to surf later in life, you cannot surf all day, every day. Your body needs time to recover. And your mind too. This is why it is important to stay in a place that offers more than just surfing. At Lemontree, we offer yoga classes, massage therapy, and easy access to hiking, cycling, and other outdoor activities. Surfing becomes part of a bigger experience, not something that exhausts you, but something that makes you feel better

Surf Lessons for Adults: A Surfing Experience That Matches Your Age and Skills
Challenges of Beginner Adult Surfers
We know exactly what it feels like to learn surfing as an adult, because we went through it ourselves. It is exciting, but it also comes with doubts, fears, and physical limitations that are very different from learning as a teenager. For this reason, we built a surf approach that directly addresses the real challenges adult surfers face:
- Uncertainty and expectations, you do not know if you will be able to stand up, or if surfing will even be possible for you
- Higher awareness of safety, you think more about risks, conditions, and consequences
- Fear of injuries, because you know recovery takes time and injuries can affect your work and daily life
- Fitness shaped by your lifestyle, long office hours, stress, and routine often impact strength, endurance, and energy
- Less flexibility and slower recovery, your body needs more time to adapt, rest, and build confidence
These are real concerns. Ignoring them does not help. Understanding them does. If you are wondering how you first surf lessons could look like check out our guide: Beginner Surf Lessons: your first steps on a surfboard
Beginner Surf Lessons Designed Specifically for Adults
This is exactly why our surf lessons are designed differently
Adult instructors who understand adult learners
All our surf instructors are adults themselves, not teenagers. They understand your fears, doubts, and goals. This creates trust, empathy, and a more comfortable learning environment
Small groups without pressure or judgment
We work with small groups so instructors can give you personal attention while still allowing a relaxed social dynamic. It is not the pressure of a private lesson, and not the chaos of a large group. It is the balance in between
Clear expectation management from day one
We always explain one important thing. There is no minimum standard here. Surfing is not about standing up as fast as possible. It is about learning to be in the ocean, understanding waves, and building confidence step by step. Standing up will come naturally
Safety is always the priority
We only surf in safe, beginner-friendly conditions. All instructors are trained and experienced. There is always a warm-up before entering the water, and safety equipment and first aid are always present. You can focus on learning, knowing you are in good hands
Teaching methods adapted to adult learning
Adults learn differently than kids. We use specific teaching techniques that focus on understanding, repetition, and confidence, not pressure or performance
Learning to surf as an adult is not about pushing harder.
It is about creating the right conditions where your body and mind can learn naturally, safely, and with confidence

Surf Coaching and Guiding for Intermediate and Advanced Adult Surfers
Challenges for Adult Surfers Who Already Know How to Surf
Surfing as an adult does not stop at beginner waves. Once you have progressed, a whole new set of challenges appears, challenges that most surf schools simply do not address:
- Finding top qualified coaches, as an intermediate or advanced adult surfer, you want someone reliable, professional, and skilled. Not a 20-year-old teaching beginner lessons
- Access to quality tailored coaching, you do not want to be stuck in beginner groups or standard surf classes. You want lessons that push your surfing forward
- Proper equipment, too often adult surfers are given beginner boards or gear that does not match their skill. You need options that fit your style and level
- Guidance to the best waves, knowing where, when, and how to surf is essential. You want someone to show you the right conditions
- Advanced training techniques, adult surfers often want more: video analysis, on-land training, surfskate exercises, and ways to refine technique beyond just paddling and catching waves
You are an intermediate or advanced surfer and you like to take your surfing more seriously, find out more about our coaching techniques here
Surf Coaching and Surf Guiding Designed for Adults
At Lemontree, we built our coaching to solve these problems and make surfing as an adult challenging, fun, and rewarding
Expert coaches with years of local experience
All of our coaches have surfed this area for over 10 years with top qualifications and extensive teaching experience. They know the waves and they know how to push your surfing safely
Semi-private format
Groups are small, maximum three surfers, and everyone is already independent in the water. This ensures that no one feels stuck in a beginner lesson while still keeping a supportive and social environment
Flexible timing and conditions-based sessions
We do not stick to a rigid schedule. Sessions are timed to match the best conditions, so you are always catching the right waves at the right moment
The right boards for your level
No beginner boards here. Bring your own or choose from Lemontree’s collection: shortboards, fishes, funboards, longboards, all suited for intermediate and advanced surfing
In-water feedback and video analysis
Coaches are in the water with you, giving tips on positioning, timing, and technique. Sessions include video analysis so you can see your biomechanics, refine your style, and truly understand how to improve
At Lemontree, adult surfers do not just surf. They train, explore, and progress.
